1. Why should generators be maintained?
Generator maintenance is key to ensuring its reliable operation during critical moments such as power outages, emergency power supplies, whether for backup power, industrial power, or power supply in remote areas. Generator maintenance helps extend equipment life, reduce the number of overhauls, lower total operating costs, and ensure quick start-up and stable power supply when needed. The core of generator maintenance is to carry out in layers according to "daily-regular-seasonal/long-term shutdown", focusing on the five major systems of lubrication, cooling, fuel, electrical, and mechanical, combined with the operating time and cycle for hierarchical maintenance, and at the same time doing records and fault warnings to ensure that the standby/commonly used units are available at any time.
2. Daily maintenance of generators
1. Check before starting
Appearance and fastening: check that the fuselage is not damaged, and the bolts and terminals are not loose; Reliable grounding.
Oil and filter element: the oil level is at the midline of the oil label, and the oil quality is clear and without emulsification/turbidity; The coolant level is normal; There is no obvious blockage of the air filter.
Fuel and starting: sufficient fuel, no leakage in the oil circuit; The starting battery voltage ≥ 24V (diesel)/12V (gasoline), the terminals are non-oxidizing, and the electrolyte level of the non-maintenance-free battery meets the standard.
Ventilation and heat dissipation: no blockage of radiators and inlet/outlet outlets, no damage to cooling fans and belts.
2. In-operation monitoring
Parameter observation: voltage, frequency, current stability, three-phase balance; Water temperature, oil temperature, and oil pressure are within the normal range.
Abnormal investigation: no peculiar smell, abnormal noise, abnormal vibration or smoke; No overheating or sparks at the wiring.
Load management: Avoid long-term operation above 80% rated power to prevent carbon build-up and overheating.
3. Maintenance after shutdown
Cleaning: Use compressed air (≤0.4MPa) to purge the fuselage, radiator and control cabinet to avoid touching live parts with a wet cloth.
Oil and Filter: Short-term downtime (≤1 week) to record oil level; For prolonged downtime (> 1 month), consider refueling or stabilizer.
Battery: The backup machine is replenished weekly to keep the battery sufficient.
3. Regular maintenance of generators
1. Maintenance every 250 hours of operation
Change the oil and oil filter: This is one of the most important maintenance. Follow the manufacturer's recommended oil specifications and change intervals.
Replace the fuel filter: Prevent water and impurities from damaging the fuel injectors.
Replace the air filter: Clean or replace it to ensure smooth air intake. More frequent in dusty environments.
Inspect the drive belt: Check for tightness and wear, adjusting or replacing if necessary.
Inspect all hoses and connections: Look for age, cracks, or leaks.
Clean the inside of the generator: Use low-pressure dry air to blow away dust, especially from windings and radiators.
2. Yearly/500-1000 hours of maintenance per run
Replace coolant and coolant filter (if equipped): Check the antifreeze and rust resistance of the antifreeze.
Replace the diesel fine filter (if available).
Comprehensive inspection of the battery and charger: Perform a load test.
Wash the exterior and interior of the radiator (if there is limescale).
Test and calibrate the control system: Check whether all sensors and protection devices (over-voltage, under-voltage, over-frequency, under-frequency, over-current, etc.) are acting accurately.
3. Overhaul (after every few years or thousands of hours of operation)
Depending on the number of hours of operation or manufacturer recommendations. May include:
Engine Section: Check fuel injectors, valve clearance, piston rings, bearings, etc.
Generator section (performed by professionals): Inspect bearings, re-lubricate or replace, check slip rings and brushes (if any), thoroughly clean and dry windings.
4. Long-term downtime and maintenance of backup machines
1. Preparation before shutdown
drain fuel or add stabilizer; Maintain normal fluid level of engine oil and coolant; Disconnect the load and turn off the output switch.
Clean the fuselage and radiator, cover the dust cover, and place it in a dry and ventilated place.
2. Maintenance during downtime
Weekly: Start idling for 5-10 minutes, check oil pressure, water temperature; Battery charging.
Monthly: check the oil level, liquid level, battery voltage; Clean the radiator and air filter.
Quarterly: Perform monthly content + fastening terminals + no-load tests, recording parameters.
3. Check before restarting
Inspect item by item according to the pre-start process; Change the oil and filter element (downtime for more than 3 months); Test that the ATS switching and load output are normal.

1. Maintenance Logs: Detailed records of each inspection, maintenance, commissioning, breakdowns, and part replacements. Include dates, hours of operation, work done, and issues found.
2. Preventive Maintenance Plan (PMS): Develop a detailed plan based on time and hours of operation, and adhere to it closely.
3. Spare Parts Inventory: Stock up on critical wearing parts such as filters, belts, relays, fuses, and even spare batteries.
